Elderhostel programs offer hikes rigorous or relaxing

CLARYVILLE, NY — Frost Valley YMCA and Elderhostel have two five-day programs planned for August. The first, from Sunday, August 17 to Friday, August 22, is called “Five Mountains In Five Days: Hiking The Catskill High Peaks.” The week of scenic and challenging hikes will include some of the highest peaks in the Catskills, encompassing spectacular vistas and a comprehensive look at the natural history and beauty of the region. Each day will be spent hiking on a variety of terrains in a wide array of environments. Led by Frost Valley’s environmental educators, participants will go on strenuous daily hikes of six to 10 miles over steep, rocky terrain with elevation gains of 800 to 2,000 feet. Field studies will focus on topics such as local ecology, geology and orienteering instruction.

This is an extremely demanding hiking week; hikers must be in very good physical shape.

For those looking for a less physically rigorous program, “Stretch And Stride: Yoga And Hiking In The Catskills” will be held from August 24 through 29. This program will complement hikes through meadows, ponds, cascading waterfalls and mountain trails with the exploration of yoga. The program is intended to rejuvenate mind, body and spirit. Expert instructors will lead daily hikes of four to six miles. They will also teach energizing breaths, strength-building yoga postures and relaxing meditation. Morning yoga will be followed by day-long hikes, capped with evening programs created to accent and enhance the daily adventures.
