Rosario of Pine Bush and Leroy of Port Jervis win gold; Fingers wins a silver and a bronze; Khan and Fiedler bronze winners

BINGHAMTON, NY — The school year has ended. But for the elite track and field athletes in Section Nine, the allure of the Empire State Games means a continuation of their training and will to win.

With the conclusion of this year’s games, a number of area notables made their statewide mark by winning medals in the Scholastic Division. Sydnie Leroy of Port Jervis won the pole vault with a leap of 3.49 meters; Nicole Rosario of Pine Bush took the 2000 steeplechase in 7:06.77. Rosario also won a silver in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:49.75. Monticello’s Jessica Fingers won the bronze in the event in 4:49.75. Fingers won the silver medal in the 5000 meter run with a time of 18:24.05.

Tri-Valley’s Rachel Sanborn was seventh in the 5000 (20:12.93) as well as in the 10,000 (45:04.34). Recently graduated teammate Tanzeel Khan won the bronze medal in the javelin with a heave of 46.65 meters. He took sixth in the shot put with a mark of 15:05 meters. Tri-Valley’s Bob Fiedler won a bronze medal in the hammer throw with a mark of 50.33 meters. Hudson Valley teammate Alec Faldemeyer of New Hampton won the gold and set a new ESG record with an uncanny throw of 63:92 meters.
