Indian storytelling at twilight
CALLICOON, NY On Saturday, July 26, the O-kah-ha-tah Storytellers will share Indian stories at twilight. The event will be held at 9279 State Route 97 in Callicoon beginning at 7:00 p.m.; look for signs along the west side of the highway. This is a public event. Admission is free.
Twilight is the traditional time for storytelling among native peoples of many cultures, seen as the time between the reality world of day and the dream world of evening. The O-kah-ha-tah Storytellers have chosen to come together at that hour to honor their American Indian brothers and sisters with the telling of both ancient and modern tales from a variety of tribes. Katt Judd, who is known locally for her performances in community theater and with the Gone Fishin Band, will pay tribute to her Cherokee ancestors in story and song. Texas native Fred Howard will also pay tribute to his Cherokee heritage. Anne Osborne will speak in the time-honored style of traditional tellers. Inspired by her friends among the Cheyenne of Oklahoma, Mary Curtis will draw upon her many years as a historian and local storyteller.
The evenings event is sponsored by the St. Oakerhater Guild of St. James Episcopal Church in Callicoon. Oakerhater is the Anglicized version of the Cheyenne name O-kah-ha-tah. St. Oakerhater was a Cheyenne who was known as Gods Warrior.
Weather permitting, the evenings program will be held outdoors, in a secluded setting. Bring a lawn chair, blanket, or sit-upon.
In the event of rain, the storytelling will be held in a nearby covered area.
