These mergansers rest on a rock in the river. Mergansers are plentiful in the region’s waterways. During the summer, young mergansers take on the coloration of the female merganser characterized by a dull orange head.

Hot summer, cool critters

It seems that when it gets hot, there is nothing like being in, on, or near the water. Some of the area’s wildlife appear to have the same idea as well. Of course, shores of lakes, rivers and streams are attractive anyway, because there is usually good habitat and plenty of food. Follow me as I travel down a stretch of the Delaware River on a warm summer morning in early July.

Join the battle against invasive plants

HONESDALE, PA—The Pike County Conservation District, Wayne County Conservation District and the National Park Service, Upper Delaware Scenic & Recreational River will host an invasive plants workshop on Friday, July 25, coinciding with Honesdale’s Sidewalk Sales event. The workshop will be held at 9:00 a.m. at the Stourbridge Professionals Complex parking lot on Maple Avenue/Park Street on Route 6 west, going out of Honesdale.
