Love leads to new arts event

BARRYVILLE, NY — Artists Pat Shearer and Ron Coldon fell in love four years ago. Then they fell in love with the Upper Delaware River region on a motorcycle ride along the area’s scenic roadways.

“We rounded a corner and I smelled the pines and knew this was it,” said Shearer. This led to their relocation to Yulan, where the new homeowners were looking for a way to promote their love of the arts while contributing something positive to their new community.

The result is the upcoming Barryville Arts in the Park, a first-ever event scheduled for August 2 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the quaint park at the intersection of routes 97 and 55.

“We want it to be a celebration of the area and the many positive things going on here,” said Shearer. “There are so many talented people in such a concentrated place.”

The event will feature 14 local artists and craftsmen, most of whom are members of the Barryville Area Arts Association. Among the available works will be photography, pottery, fabric arts, ceramics, hand-carved signs, stone and metal work, rustic furniture and more. Where possible, artists will provide live demonstrations of their work.

Proceeds from a silent auction of more then 15 art pieces and other items will benefit Highland Renaissance, which performs a variety of community beautification and preservation activities, including maintenance of the park.

An open mic will be available throughout the day for use by acoustic performers or small groups. Just across the road from the fair, shoppers can enjoy the local farmers market from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The couple hopes to see Arts in the Park become a monthly event. “We’ve been floored with the support we’ve received,” said Shearer. “We’ve met a lot of good-hearted people here and there’s a very positive vibe,” added Coldon.
