Dragonflies and damselflies

LEHMAN TOWNSHIP, PA — Botanist and biologist Bill Olson will lead a weekend of Dragonflies & Damselflies at the Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) in Dingmans Ferry on July Friday, July 18 through Sunday, July 20.

Summer is the best time to spot these creatures skimming along local streams and ponds. This weekend getaway is a great opportunity for insect-lovers to spend time outdoors and study these colorful insects at the same time.

Learn to identify and observe common dragonflies and damselflies that call the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area home, using an insect net to see them closely and handle them safely. Olson will also teach participants the life-stages, feeding habits, biology and ecology of these insects, which belong to the Odonata family. Participants will travel to various locations in the park to explore the habitats that the insects utilize during their short lifespan above the water. Spend the day enjoying the outdoors and searching for dragonflies and damselflies. During the evening, participants will discuss the insects found during the day and other topics related to Odonates.

The weekend program includes a two-night stay in a PEEC cabin and all meals from dinner on Friday through lunch on Sunday. Bring along any field guides to dragonflies or damselflies that you may have. A butterfly or insect net and a pair of close-focus binoculars are also suggested for the weekend. PEEC will also have nets available for participants during the weekend.

Lodging rates are $160 for members and $175 for non-members. Rates without lodging are $100 for members and $115 for non-members.
