Join the battle against invasive plants

HONESDALE, PA — The Pike County Conservation District, Wayne County Conservation District and the National Park Service, Upper Delaware Scenic & Recreational River will host an invasive plants workshop on Friday, July 25, coinciding with Honesdale’s Sidewalk Sales event. The workshop will be held at 9:00 a.m. at the Stourbridge Professionals Complex parking lot on Maple Avenue/Park Street on Route 6 west, going out of Honesdale.

Non-native invasive plants are taking over our waterways and woods. Often introduced by humans, these invasive species are destroying native plant and animal communities by crowding them out and taking over their habitat. In streams and rivers this can mean unhealthy water, habitat unsuitable for native species such as fish, and decreased opportunities for boating and other family activities. Pennsylvania has over 50 invasive plants and more are being discovered each year. Fighting the onslaught of these plants will be an uphill battle, but everyone can help.

For those interested, there will be a hands-on demonstration of Japanese knotweed removal following the discussion. Japanese knotweed is one of the most widespread species in our region that threatens local waterways, including the Lackawaxen River watershed.

Light refreshments will be provided and the program is free of charge. This event will be held rain or shine.

For more information Pike County residents should call 570/226-8220. Wayne County residents should contact Jamie Roche at 570/253-0930.
