Hawley celebrates the 4th ‘down the shore’

HAWLEY, PA — Hawley has a full day of fun planned for Independence Day this year. The festivities begin at 12:00 noon, when the annual Fourth of July parade steps off on Main Avenue. Then First Friday, an event that usually starts in the evening, will start at 2:00 p.m. in honor of the holiday and fill downtown with special activities, sales, food and entertainment until about 7:00 p.m.

This weekend, the First Friday theme will be “On The Boardwalk.” The shore/beach theme will feature boardwalk foods such as hot dogs, caramel corn and fries along with carnival-style games, music and more.

“We are trying to achieve a real ‘down the shore’ feeling for this First Friday,” said Downtown Hawley Partnership vice-president, Elaine Herzog. “There will be something for everyone. Among the activities many of the merchants will be offering are games of skill for the young and young-at-heart, and the Hawley Farmer’s Market will be in full swing. There is a book sale at the Library to benefit First Book, and several area restaurants are offering the popular ‘taste of Hawley.’ The NEPA Coasters Car Club will also be on hand, lining up in late afternoon to early evening with music by DJ Ricky Z, Pilot of the Airwaves. The last cruise boasted nearly 100 cars and it is quite a sight to see these vintage motorcars lined up on Keystone Street.”

The day will be crowned off with the annual Fourth of July fireworks at nearby Lake Wallenpaupack, a short mile east of Hawley. The fireworks, presented by the Hawley-Lake Wallenpaupack Chamber of Commerce, are a tradition at the lake.
