The eye of the beholder

Each of us perceives beauty in highly individualized ways. For many, the image of three snakes writhing in a local waterway strikes a repulsive chord, while that of a dappled fawn framed in spring foliage is dear indeed.

For local photographer David B. Soete, whose nature images will be featured in The River Reporter’s upcoming “2008 Literary Gazette,” both of these subjects are equally compelling portraits of fellow life forms inhabiting the Upper Delaware Region.

See what Soete encounters in his ramblings, and what regional writers have to share, in “Nature,” which will become available in the July 3rd issue of The River Reporter.

Three Northern water snakes perform breeding activities in the outlet from Narrowsburg’s Little Lake Erie. The large snake at left is the female. She is flanked by two smaller males. The eggs at left were deposited by another aquatic animal. Northern water snakes typically bear 15 to 30 live young in late summer or fall. (Click for larger version)
