Life carved in stone

NARROWSBURG, NY — Naomi Teppich’s stone carvings, ceramic wall sculpture and mixed-media drawings are currently on view at the Delaware Valley Arts Center’s Alliance Gallery, in an exhibit titled “Ancient Morphons.” The exhibit will be on view through July 12.

“Ancient Morphons is my interpretation and response to many life forms found in nature and fossilized rock,” said artist Teppich. “The stone for me is a symbol of strength, earthiness and timelessness.” Most of her stone carvings, like “Morphine II,” above, are made of Tiger’s Eye alabaster. a golden grey colored stone with whitish veins that combine and contrast in tonal values. “I like to convert this heavy and massive material into soft, sensual shapes.” But for Teppich, sculpting a ceramic piece is a much different experience. “The clay is a more playful and immediate medium. Sea lilies, brachiopods, bony fish, brittle stars and lichens have all left some of their features in the work.”

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For more information visit ArtsAllianceSite.org or call 845/252-7576.
