Lake Lacawac for young and old

LAKE WALLENPAUPACK, PA — The Lacawac Sanctuary will host “Explore Lake Lacawac” on Sunday, June 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

Naturalist Jen Naugle will guide participants around Lake Lacawac, the sanctuary’s 13,000-year-old glacial lake and a National Natural Landmark. Traveling by canoes and row boats, they will explore the 52-acre lake to learn about its formation as well as the unique and interesting plants and animals that live there. This program is geared for ages 12 and older. Watercraft will be provided.

Additional dates to explore Lake Lacawac are Sunday, July 27 at 10:00 a.m. and Sunday, August 24 at 10:00 a.m.

The cost of the program is $15, $10 for Lacawac members.

Lacawac for youngsters

On Tuesday, June 24, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, there will be a children’s hike at the sanctuary. Participants will walk along a diverse trail within the sanctuary at a child’s pace and interest level. We will look at animal tracks, bugs and salamanders, and even play a game or two. The cost of the program is $5 per child, $3 for Lacawac members. Pre-registration required.

The 520-acre Lacawac Sanctuary is a non-profit nature preserve, research field station and historic site located on Lake Wallenpaupack. The sanctuary’s programs are open to the public and include free tours and three miles of hiking trails. Membership, directions, programs and other information can be found at lacawac.org.
