‘Seeds in the Heart: Abstracts of Nature’

NARROWBURG, NY — The paintings of Hisako Kobayashi will be featured at the new show at River Gallery—The Art of Living starting on Saturday, June 21. There will be a reception on Saturday from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. During the show, the River Gallery will be selling a catalogue of Hisako’s catalogue works, the proceeds of which will be donated to the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance. The show will run through Saturday, July 26.

Born in Japan and now based in New York City, Kobayashi connects the Japanese love of nature with the abstract expressionism of the New York School. The title of the show, “Seeds in the Heart: Abstracts of Nature,” reflects the borderline Kobayashi’s works tread between abstract studies in light and color and impressionistic landscapes.

Jonathan Goodman writes, “Her work challenges the postmodern assumption that painting is finished as a medium; the paintings are nearly sacramental in their devotion to the spiritual, its tricks of light, its depth of feeling and its expression of a quiet loveliness. The Japanese belief in the transcendence of the moment is also a part of Kobayashi’s art, feeding her intuitive grasp of form.”

Kobayashi has exhibited in Tokyo, Paris, Berlin, Shanghai, Morocco, Washington DC, Santa Fe, Chicago and New York City.

The play of light and color in the paintings of Hisako Kobayashi, like this one, bring them tantalizing close to resolving themselves into landscapes. An exhibit of Kobayashi’s paintings will be on display at River Gallery–The Art of Living from Saturday, June 21 through Saturday, July 26. (Click for larger version)
