Celebrating the mighty trout
Livingston Manors annual parade showcases local creativity
LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY One of the seasons most imaginative events, Livingston Manors annual Trout Parade, is scheduled Saturday, June 14. There will be live music on the Main Street stage starting at 12:00 noon, with the parade stepping off at 1:00 p.m., and more music planned until 3:30 p.m.
Floats and marching groups at the parade typically display a wide range of creativity and talent, and this year the parade committee provided an extra incentive for participants with some funding from creativity awards. Winners were WJFF Radio Catskill, Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson, For Faith Parish and the Mid-Atlantic Basset Hound Rescue. Reportedly some of those basset hounds will show up dressed as trout.
Making its debut this year is the all-female group Paprika, performing dance music from around the globe, and the Catskill Puppet Theatre, with its puppet classics, including a 15-foot tall wizard and an eight-foot long fish. The crowd-pleasing Hungry March Band will return with a blend of musical talent and zany costumes.
Also during the event, Outsiders Studio will present Monitors on Main, an installation of video works in selected storefronts in downtown Livingston Manor featuring video artists Glenn Church, Claire Coleman, M. Henry Jones and James Karpowicz. These installations, along with artwork from Livingston Manor Central School students, will be on view in several storefronts. The video pieces range in style from aquatic abstraction to fishy and funky animation.
The Livingston Manor Chamber of Commerce-sponsored event raises funds to benefit the Livingston Manor Central Schools art and music programs through business and individual donations and the sale of parade t-shirts and posters.
