NARROWSBURG, NY Attendees at the fifth annual DIGIT Expo this weekend can view new digital videos, learn the steps to start a website, participate in an interactive sound composition, and even make their own mini-movie and win $500.
An opening reception and video installation screenings will kick off the festivities on Friday from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Delaware Arts Center. Looped screenings continue on Saturday at the Loft Gallery in the Arts Center, and at storefronts on Narrowsburgs Main Street, featuring digital works by artists from far and near. Artist Jason Van Andenseeking to reconcile human emotion, intelligence, and free will through digital artpresents a videogame called Farklempt!, in which players practice keeping tabs on their emotions.
Also on Saturday, DIGIT will host a series of workshops and panel discussions. At 1:00 p.m., multi-media artist Daria Dorosh will lead a talk titled Exploring Digital On-Demand Production, looking at the current do-it-yourself trend. At 2:00 p.m., a family from New York City who work and play in the digital realm will discuss how to Do it Digitally. And at 3:00 p.m., several artists and thinkers will discuss The Dark Side of Digital, examining how technology and digitalization is changing all of our lives, as well as the privacy concerns that we must face. Visitors to the Arts Center also have the opportunity to listen to the DIGIT 2008 Best Audio winner: Henry Gwiazdas sound art piece Claudia and Paul.
Saturday at 6:30 p.m. on Main Street, composer Tom Holmes will orchestrate his new musical work, Time Travel Back to the 20th Century: Echoes of John Cage and Charles Ives paddling their canoe up stream.... (See page 8C). The evening will be rounded out by a program of new video works by digital artists from around the globe, in genres including animation, experimental, narrative and mockumentary. The show begins at 8:00 p.m. at the Tusten Theatre at 210 Bridge Street. Prizes totaling $1500 will be awarded.
Throughout the weekend, artists of all skill levels are invited to make a movie, for a $500 award. The on-location movies must be no more than three minutes long and must be shot and edited between June 13 and 15 in the town of Narrowsburg. The short videos will be screened on Sunday, June 15 at 12:00 noon at the Quick and Gritty video slam at the Tusten Theatre.
