Businesses, nonprofits reach out

MONTICELLO, NY — More than 20 businesses and nonprofit organizations gathered in front of Makovic Designer Homes on Route 17 on May 31 to let people know what services and products the county has to offer.

The event was called Who’s Who in Sullivan County, and was organized by the Rural Sullivan Housing Corporation (RSHC). Shari Trust, the organization’s executive director, said the genesis of the event was a need to outreach to people in the area.

RSHC is a nonprofit organization that helps homeowners rehabilitate housing, and the organization is also certified by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as a foreclosure counseling agency. Trust said that with foreclosures growing in the county, people call RSHC “when they have that foreclosure notice in their hand.” Trust hopes to get the message out that people who are having trouble making mortgage payments should call RSHC sooner rather than later.

But the event was not limited to organizations connected to housing. There were nonprofits ranging from The Discovery Center to the Sullivan County Historical Society, and businesses such as banks and car dealerships.

Organizers are planning to hold the event again next year.
