Second Maris Hearn concert to feature Rod MacDonald

FORESTBURGH, NY — The Friends of Maris Hearn will present the second annual Maris Hearn Memorial Concert on Sunday, June 8 at 2:00 p.m. at the Forestburgh Playhouse Tavern at 39 Forestburgh Road. The concert, a benefit for WJFF, will feature Rod MacDonald and Peggy Atwood.

Throughout a 30-year performing career, MacDonald has been entertaining audiences worldwide with his timeless ballads, modern folk songs and his musical versatility. Known for his passionate interest in the events that shape our world’s societies, Rod is regarded as “one of the most politically and socially aware lyricists of our time.” (All-MusicGuide.)

Of her music, Atwood writes, “My music has often been difficult to categorize, but generally falls into the ‘folk’ category; I used to call it ‘neo-esoteric crossover folk country pop rock,’ but that, of course, proved to be a source of confusion for most people.”

Hearn was a peace activist, lesbian, feminist, athlete and avid bicyclist, who died on March 8, 2007 after an almost 20-year battle with cancer. She had a long running show, “The Gumbo Shop,” on WJFF. The Friends of Maris Hearn is an ad hoc group of long-time friends and supporters of WJFF who want to celebrate her life, and to benefit WJFF .

The suggested donation is $15 and can be paid at the door. Sponsorships are also available for $100, which includes two tickets and a copy of Maris’ six CD Legacy Project Set. Sponsor checks should be made payable to WJFF/Radio Catskill in Honor of Maris Hearn.
