Lacawac Sanctuary to honor founder

LAKE ARIEL, PA — To honor L. Arthur Watres, co-founder and inspiring spirit of Lacawac Sanctuary, the sanctuary will host a celebratory cocktail party in its 105-year-old lodge on Friday, June 20 at 5:30 p.m. The lodge will be officially designated “The L. Arthur Watres Lodge” at the event.

Arthur and his mother Isabel founded Lacawac, a not-for-profit institution, in 1966. The family has been associated with Lacawac since 1913, when Col. Louis A. Watres, Arthur’s grandfather, bought the land as part to help establish the acreage needed to create Lake Wallenpaupack. The Watreses wanted Lacawac to provide education on conservation and environmental issues to the NEPA region; to preserve Lake Lacawac, its watershed, and historic buildings, and to encourage ecological research of its protected glacial lake and woodland.

A donation of $45 is requested, which will help support education programs and maintain the historic buildings at Lacawac. Send checks to 94 Sanctuary Road, Lake Ariel, PA 18436.
