Spring hiking, led by a master

DINGMANS FERRY, PA — There will be a free nature hike at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27 at the Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC), led by naturalist John Serrao. Participants will meet at the PEEC campus and then carpool to a scenic site within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.

Sights to be seen at this season include migrating warblers, tanagers, orioles and other colorful songbirds, as well as bald eagles, spring wildflowers, butterflies, frogs, salamanders, reptiles and other signs of spring.

The walk will last for between one and a half and two hours, and will be about two miles over fairly easy terrain. Please wear comfortable shoes, hiking boots preferred, and bring a water bottle. Binoculars and a camera are suggested.

Other walks this summer will be PEEC’s free Nesting Birds Trek with Serrao on Sunday, June 22 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and its Butterflies & Other Arthropods Trek from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on July 13.

PEEC’s mission is to enhance environmental awareness, knowledge and appreciation through hands-on experience in a natural outdoor classroom. It is located near mile marker 8, within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.
