Damascus students supervisors for a day

DAMASCUS, PA — Four students from the Damascus Elementary School spent a day with the Damascus Township Supervisors, shadowing them and learning how local government functions.

The day was coordinated by Howard Schuchman, who has organized these days for a number of years.

“We visited the quarry on Oregon Turnpike and other local businesses,” said Thomas Carton. “It was a lot of fun and we learned a lot.”

At the meeting in the evening, the students presented motions for consideration and voted on them with the assistance of the supervisors.

“They did everything that we have to do at a meeting,” said chairman Jeff Dexter.

“I travel around the state a lot and visit township meetings and I’ve seen nothing as good as this,” said a visiting staff person from a state communications department who attended the supervisors’ meeting.
