Sullivan County SCIL All-Stars capture first state title

By BRIAN TINGLEY

OSWEGO, NY — The Sullivan County Interacademic League won its first state championship with a 275.08 to 249.67 win over Oswego County on May 15. This year’s participants were Monticello’s Ann Joy, Lily Carbonara, Frank Segro and Dan Cunningham; Roscoe’s Heather Hodge and Brighid Fogarty; Tri-Valley’s Dan Killian, Skylar Musa, Charlie Edwards and Amanda Martin; Liberty’s Elana Ehrenberg and Leila Zilles; Eldred’s Nick Simonelli and Gabby Westfall; Sullivan West’s Ella MacDonald and Julianne Reggero; and Fallsburg’s Ting Zhao and Uddhava Stowell.

At the Sullivan-Oswego Showdown IV “Showdown on the Shore,” the kids had to make sand sculptures and mosaics based on lyrics from Beach Boys songs such as “Fun, Fun, Fun” and “I Get Around.” The sculptures could only use sand, while the mosaics could use materials found on the beach.

The students were also asked to create a scale that they would use to prepare a bag with a mass of sand between 200-500 grams, given only the bag, the sand, some duct tape and their ingenuity.

With Oswego taking first and second on the sand sculptures and second and third on the mosaics, the Sullivan teams needed great results from their scale teams, and managed to pull it off at the last minute. The first Sullivan team beat the first Oswego team trying to hit the 367 gram mark, but the second Oswego team all but put the competition in the bag with a 363 gram bag of sand. Just before handing in the bag for official weighing, Nick from Eldred took out a pinch of sand. Their bag weighed in at 368 grams, winning that portion of the competition with enough points to also win the overall competition.
