Lady Panthers glide by Lady Bulldogs for greens season sweep; Fallsburg gets its second win by beating Roscoe
By RICHARD A. ROSS
CALLICOON, NY May can be an adventure in Sullivan County when it comes to the wiles of the weather. Before you don shorts and a T-shirt for a golf match, youd be well advised to go to the weather channel to find out if youd be better suited in long johns and mittens.
As the ladies from Sullivan West, Monticello, Fallsburg and Roscoe got set to tee off on May 12, a brisk wind and temperatures to shiver ones timbers blasted the greens at the Villa Roma in the late afternoon. The prospect of frost by the morning sent the mercury lower as the sun began to sink lower in the western sky.
In truth, there have been few balmy days this spring. But if youre serious about golf, youve got to learn to manage your game in all kinds of conditions.
This match featured the second part of home and away frays between Monticello and Sullivan West. The Lady Panthers eked out a narrow 162-165 home victory in the first encounter. This time out, the margin of victory would burgeon to 20 strokes as the Lady Panthers, led by senior standout Gabby Medinas seven-over-par 42, topped Sullivan Wests leader Jillian Fifes 55. Similarly, Brittany Knapp shot a 56 to edge Claire Stabberts 59. Amy Conways 54 came in four strokes ahead of Sullivan Wests Rachel Dickey. As the girls completed their tour of the front nine, Monticello prevailed by the score of 142-172.
Sullivan Wests record fell to 6-3, while Monticellos improved to 9-2. A subsequent win over Ellenville gave Monticello the Division III title.
Both squads bested Fallsburg, which for its part posted its second win of the season as the Lady Comets bested the winless Roscoes Lady Blue Devils 186-194.
Fallsburg was led by Amanda McAuliff (60), who tied Roscoes leader Nicole Ackerley. But Fallsburgs Brittany Hunter (62) and Brooke Rappaport (64) surpassed Roscoes Martha Fassberger (67) and Ally Bishop (67). Fallsburg improved to 2-9, while Roscoe fell to 0-9.
