DONALD H. BATES

Donald H. Bates of Honesdale PA, died Saturday, May, 10, 2008 in the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. he was 75.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Edna L. Comino Bates.

Donald was born in Honesdale, the son of the late Henry and Lila Harvey Bates.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was employed by Fowler’s in their recapping plant and worked in construction for Dorsan Construction Company and Camp Cayuga. He was a member of the Bethany United Methodist Church in Bethany, PA. Donald collected John Deere tractors and was a big fan of NASCAR racing.

He is survived by sons James D. Bates and Leonard L. Bates and wife Patricia, all of Honesdale; brothers Frank and wife Carol, Ray and wife Sandy, Vince and wife Deanna, Clifford, Lee and wife Nancy of Beach Lake, Harvey and wife Karen, all of Honesdale, Jim and wife Kathy of Clarke, NJ and Jerry Bates of Honesdale; two sisters, Sally Mang and husband Leslie and Marilyn Johnson and husband Jesse, all of Honesdale; three grandchildren, Anne Marie Bates, Jay Bates, and Brian Bates all of Honesdale; an uncle, Alton Harvey; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 in the Bethany United Methodist Church, Bethany, PA with the Rev. Val Rommel officiating. Burial was on Wednesday in the Bethany Cemetery, Bethany.

BONITA “BONNIE” DOW

Bonita “Bonnie” Dow of Andover Township, NJ, died Saturday, May 10, 2008, at Newton Memorial Hospital in Newton, NJ. She was 65.

The daughter of the late Thomas and Adele Marley McKim, she was born in North Haledon, NJ. Dow lived in Newton, NJ, Montague, NJ, and Fallsburg, NY, before moving to Andover Township. She was a member of the Florida First Presbyterian Church in Florida, NY.

She is survived by her husband, Courtney Dow; two sons, Courtney J. Dow of Shohola, PA, and Seth T. Dow of Texas; one daughter, Vanessa M. Bisone of Florida, NY; five grandchildren; and one brother, Craig McKim of Allendale, NJ.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 14, at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home. Interment followed in Cedar Ridge Cemetery in Blairstown, NJ.


ANDREW D’AGATI

Andrew J. D’Agati of Starlight, NY, died on Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Johnson City, NY. He was 75.

He and his wife, the former Gwen Milk, were married in 1958 in Oneonta, NY.

He was born on July 5, 1932, in the Bronx, NY, son of Agostino and Josephine (Billeci) D’Agati.

He was an artificial inseminator for Eastern Artificial Breeders, Ithaca, NY; sewage enforcement officer for Preston Township for 39 years; and worked for Mount Pleasant Township and Starrucca Borough.

He is survived by his wife; seven sons, Andrew Jr. of Deposit, NY, Francis Paul and wife Diana of Jeffersonville, NY, Michael and wife Ann of Deposit NY, Anthony and Willy, Binghamton, NY, Patrick and wife Lori of Elberta, AL, John Fish of Starlight and James Fish and wife Joan of Olyphant; a daughter, Jo-Ann Hellmers and husband John of Conklin, NY; a brother, Paul and wife Brigitte D’Agati of Starrucca; 12 grandchildren; several brothers- and sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jessica D’Agati.

A funeral mass was held on May 5, 2008 at St. Paul’s Church, Hancock, NY, with the Rev. Stephen Morris officiating. Burial was in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Hancock.

CONSTANCE FINK

Constance Marie “Connie” Fink, a lifelong resident of Hortonville, NY, passed peacefully into eternal rest on May 10, 2008. She was 85.

Connie was born Easter Sunday in Hortonville, the daughter of Elmer W. and Alma (Schmidt) Robisch. She was the widow of Howard F. Fink. They married while he was in the U.S. Army Air Corps during the Second World War. After the war they made their home and raised their four sons in Hortonville.

Connie lived a fulfilling life in simpler times. She enjoyed her hometown and visits by her many lifelong friends. She expressed gratitude for her youngest son, David, for his efforts in making it possible for her to remain in her family home after the loss of her husband.

Survivors include sons John H. and wife Marcia of Callicoon, Terrance A. and wife, Kathleen of Callicoon, Thomas O. of Livingston Manor and David J. of Hortonville; grandchildren Amy and Jennifer Fink; Nikki Maxwell and husband William, Farrah and Terrance Fink, Joann Gibson and husband Thomas and Michael Fink; great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Her brother, Elmer O. (Sonny) Robisch, predeceased her several years ago.

There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held later at the convenience of the family.

IRMA F. FULTON

Irma F. Fulton, a lifelong resident of Kenoza Lake, NY and a devoted mother and housewife, died May 2, 2008 at Wayne Woodland Manor in Waymart, PA. She was 96.

The daughter of Fred B. and Theodora Reynolds Grant, she was born on January 28, 1912 in Hurleyville, NY.

She was a member of the Kenoza Lake United Methodist Church and the Ladies Aide of the church.

Survivors include her children, Margaret Sommer McLeod and husband Robert of North Branch, NY, Virginia Hunt and husband Robert of Oneonta, NY, Edward Fulton and wife Evelyn of Cypress, TX and Roger Fulton of Middletown, NY; her sister, Doris Blais Vesely and husband, Fred of Hartwick, NY; son-in-law Roy Hoffman of Oriental, NC; two brothers-in-law; grandchildren Charles Sommer and wife Maria, Douglas Sommer and wife Laura, Cheryl Hinckley, J. Vance Hunt, Terry Visconti and husband John, Barbara Hoffman, Pamela Brandonio and husband Barry and Dr. Kirsten Fulton; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Earl W. Fulton; her daughter, Jean Hoffman, grandson Paul Hunt; and three sisters, Helen Oles, Marion VanKeuren and Eleanor Fulton; and by her son-in-law, Allan Sommer.

Services were held May 6, at Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville, NY with Pastor Bill Hagerty officiating.

Burial was made in Kenoza Lake Cemetery.

EVELYN A. GARGIULO

Evelyn A. Gargiulo , a 25-year resident of Kenoza Lake, NY, died Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at Grover Hermann Hospital, the Callicoon, NY division of Catskill Regional Medical Center. She was 79.

The daughter of Roman and Stella Senkevich Pilarczyk, she was born July 24, 1928.

She attended the Fashion Institute of Technology and was a professional artist. Evelyn was a loving, intelligent wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Anthony; her three sons: Jim, Rich and Mike; and her four grandchildren: Michael, Justin, Adele and Sophia.

Funeral services were on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home, Jeffersonville, NY, with Father Ignatius Vu officiating. Burial was made in Callicoon Cemetery, Callicoon, NY.

Memorial donations may be made to the Parkinsons Disease Foundation.


HELEN ALBERTA GILES

Helen Alberta Giles, formerly of Poyntelle, PA, died Friday, May 2, 2008 at the Forest City Nursing Center, Forest City, PA. She was 93.

She was the widow of Ralph Giles who died in 1985; they were married February 23, 1935.

She was born in Aldenville, PA, the daughter of the late Ira and Leah Stiles Wright. She was a member of the Orson Methodist Church, the Northern Wayne Fire Company Women’s Auxiliary and the Rebekah Lodge and the Eastern Star. Prior to retirement, she worked in the helmet department for the Gentex Corporation. She was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed painting, crocheting and reading.

Surviving are sons Dwane Giles, Poyntelle and Gordon Giles, Lakewood, PA; daughters Judith Slifko, Hawley and Sandra LaPoint, Beach Lake, PA; sister Doris Mead, Creamton, PA; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by sisters Marge Gravelac and Evelyn Manaton.

The funeral was held May 6, 2008 in the Jones and Brennan Funeral Home, 430 Main Street, Forest City, officiated by Rev. Jay Best. Interment was at Wheeler Hill Cemetery, Pleasant Mount, PA.

STEPHAN H. GLASSER

Stephan H. Glasser of Barryville, NY, died Sunday, May 4, 2008 at Kaplan Family Hospice Residence. He was 64.

He was born June 14, 1943 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Ruth Glasser and the late David Glasser. He was married to the late Helene Marsha Hunter before she passed away in February of 2004.

He proudly served our country in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He was a member of The Lions Club in Highland, NY, a current member of the Highland Zoning Board and a past member of Eldred Central School Board of Education.

A family statement reads: “Stephan was a compassionate and supportive father who was loved by all who knew him. He would never hesitate to place the needs of others before his own. We will all miss him dearly.”

In addition to his mother, Ruth Glasser of Marlboro, NJ, he is survived by his companion, Pamela Maurice of New York, NY; son Seth Glasser of Maplewood, MN; and brother, Andrew Glasser of Kew Gardens, NY.

There will be no visitation. Memorial services will be held at a date later to be announced. Cremation will be at H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg, PA.

DOROTHY I. HENDERSON

Dorothy I. (Stanton) Henderson, of Honesdale, PA, died on Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale. She was 87.

Her husband, Norman R. Henderson, died September 10, 1976.

Born September 22, 1920 at the family home in Pine Mill, PA, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Beatrice Craven Stanton.

A housewife and mother, she also worked at Peck’s Nursing Home in Honesdale as a nurse’s aide. She enjoyed spending time with her sisters and going to lunch with them. She also enjoyed collecting frogs. Mrs. Henderson was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Honesdale.

Surviving are three sons, Thomas Holbert of Rockledge, FL, John Henderson and wife Connie of Damascus, PA and Richard Henderson and wife Marilyn of Honesdale; two daughters, Jade Swartwood and husband Daryl of Bloomsburg, PA and Jill Reymen and husband Richard of Jacksonville Beach, FL.; daughter-in-law Darlene Holbert; three sisters, Ada Levanowitz, Hilda Lee and Hazel Williams; 16 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and her caregiver, Robin Miszler.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Judith Holbert and Brenda McClosky; a son, Burton Holbert; daughter-in-law Christine Holbert; granddaughter, Andrea Swartwood; brothers Walter, Thomas, Wilson and Gerald Stanton; and sisters Eleanor Schuman, Esther Johnson and Louise Van Orden.

Funeral services were on May 10 at Hessling Funeral Home, Honesdale. Interment followed in East Dyberry Cemetery.


ROBERT G. KIESLING

Robert G. Kiesling of Barryville, NY, a longtime resident of the area, died May 12, 2008, at home with his family by his side. He was 60.

He was born February 18, 1948 in Suffern, NY, the son of the late Gene and the late Grace Langler Kiesling. He was married to Denice Galletto Kiesling.

He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons and proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.

A family statement reads: “Gone Fishin.”

He is survived by his wife at home; sons Robert Jr. and wife, Betty E. of Stroudsburg, PA, Scott and wife, Elianna of New Jersey and Michael of Bricktown, NJ; daughter Lisa Galletto of Tamaqua, PA; sister Barbara Reed and husband Tom of Arizona; grandchildren Kyle, Logan, Justin, Liam and Brianna Kiesling and Kalea Mary Galletto; his best friend; uncle Chuck Simpkins; and nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his dog, Rebel.

Friends may call at the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home, 3412 Route 97, Barryville, NY 12719, on Wednesday, May 14, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Cremation will be at H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg, PA.


SOPHIE McDERMOTT

Sophie McDermott, a 35-year resident of Callicoon Center, NY and a retired secretary for Exxon Corporation, died Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris, NY. She was 81.

The daughter of Joseph and Veronica Wicks Tamelis, she was born September 30, 1926 in Brooklyn.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Obernburg, NY, the Ladies Auxillary of the Callicoon Center Fire Department; and a former employee of Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake, NY.

Survivors include her husband, George McDermott, at home; and her sister, Ann Tamelis of Rockaway Park, Queens.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, May 9, 2008 in St. Mary’s Church in Obernburg. Burial was made in Calvary Cemetery in Youngsville, NY.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.


ALICE C. OHLS

Alice Ohls, a longtime resident of Callicoon, NY, died Monday, May 5, 2008 on her birthday at Columbia-St. Mary’s Hospice in Milwaukee, WI. She was 96.

Born in Mt. Victory, OH on May 5, 1912, she married H.E. Ohls in 1936. Two years later, they moved to Callicoon to establish a chicken hatching business. Mr. Ohls predeceased Alice in 1952. She moved to Milwaukee in 1980 to live near her daughter.

In Callicoon, Alice was extensively involved in volunteer work, working as a nurses’ aide during World War II, raising funds to build a new hospital, serving on the Volunteer Ambulance Corps and participating in the activities of the Callicoon Methodist Church.

Alice is survived by her two children, James C. Ohls of Hopewell, NJ and Linda Buntin and husband John of Whitefish Bay, WI; four grandchildren, Kate Copeland of Portland, OR, Maisie Buntin of Whitefish Bay, Sarah Ohls of Ewing, NJ and David Ohls of Madison, WI.

In keeping with her wishes, she will be cremated in Milwaukee. At a later time, her cremains will be brought to Callicoon, which she considered home.
