Port’s 2008 Soap Box Derby the biggest ever

PORT JERVIS, NY — With 128 registered drivers, the 2008 Port Jervis Soap Box Derby will be the largest in Port’s history. Derby Day will be Sunday, June 8 and will take place on Sussex Street in three divisions: Stock, Super Stock and Masters.

Spectators are also invited to join the drivers on practice days, which are held on Jersey Avenue at 5:30 p.m. The next practice day, for the Stock division, will be on Monday, May 19, and an open day for all divisions will be held on Thursday, May 29. Refreshments are available for racers and spectators.

Children ages eight to 18 will compete to become one of Port’s champions, who will then go on to Akron, OH to compete in the All-American Soap Box Derby Race in July.

Food and craft vendors will line Sussex Street the day of the derby, and spaces are still open for those who wish to participate.

This year’s event is sponsored by several organizations including Kolmar Laboratories, Fox Country 96.7, 1490 ESPN Radio, Fox 103.1 and Milford Chrysler Sales.
