MALI-cool at Big Twig

ROSCOE, NY — Internationally renowned trombonist Roswell Rudd joins several well-known Malian musicians in a special concert on May 17 at Big Twig Studios. Rudd’s MALI-cool combo will perform in the Saturday evening concert, which benefits Jeffersonville, New York-based community radio station WJFF Radio Catskill and will be broadcast live at 90.5/94.5 FM and streamed at wjffradio.org.

Hailed by New York Times columnist John Wilson as “… a trombonist of such sweeping power and majesty that he transcends all styles,” Rudd has influenced an entire generation of musicians. He has received industry accolades as a composer (Guggenheim Fellowship, 2000) and a performer (Jazz Journalists Association Trombonist of the Year, 2003, 2004, 2005).

The African musicians that make up the MALI-cool experience are known as sterling musical improvisers whose traditional instruments provide entertaining contrasts and wonderful harmony with Rudd’s trombone mastery. Together, the combo presents a fun, whimsical program that appeals to lovers of various musical genres.

Funded through a grant from the New York State Music Fund, the 7:00 p.m. show is part of a larger series of intimate performances, dubbed “Live from Big Twig.” Tickets are on sale now for $25 apiece.
