Snacking on taxes Manufacturer asks for tax incentives; no health insurance worries lawmakers MONTICELLO, NY—On its website, Ideal Snacks bills the goodies it sells as “organic certified, salty or sweet, with high protein, high fiber, low fat and no trans fat.” However, it was not the company’s products, rather its employee benefits, that came under discussion at the government center last Thursday.

Gas drilling opponents hold mass meeting ‘Royalty checks versus the beauty of your land’ CALLICOON, NY—Over 400 people sat in silent amazement as a 26-minute amateur film showed some of the excesses of gas drilling currently going on in a township in western Pennsylvania. The meeting was held at the Delaware Youth Center in Callicoon on Saturday, May 3 and was organized by the Damascus Citizens, a Pennsylvania-based group that opposes gas drilling. Members of the Damascus group traveled to western Pennsylvania to make the film. |

Elderly couple hopes to replace trailer Fund set up at Jeff Bank JEFFERSONVILLE, NY—The electrical fire that erupted in the dining room ceiling spread quickly on Sunday April 8. Members of the Jeffersonville Fire Department who were attending an afternoon chicken barbecue at the fire station arrived within minutes, and were able to contain the damage to some degree; the owner’s purse and some important documents were saved from the inferno. But the trailer on Fauble Road was damaged beyond repair and rendered uninhabitable. |
