Liberty posts victory over inexperienced Monticello

LIBERTY, NY — For Monticello tennis coach Urvasi Gupta, the task of trying to recruit players for the boys tennis team has been an uphill battle. But this spring, Gupta has a group of enthusiastic young men eager to learn the game from the veteran coach.

Part of the problem is that there is no indoor tennis facility left in Sullivan County, except for one sole court at the Villa Roma. In the fall, Gupta was able to access the gym for her girls tennis team. But in early spring, the baseball and softball teams were inside.

Winless thus far, following their 5-2 defeat against Liberty, Monticello players remain upbeat.

Liberty’s John Laguio defeated Kyle Lounsbury 6-4, 6-1. Liberty’s Calvin Henry blanked Andrew Gunther 6-0, 6-0. Liberty’s Ishan Trevedi defeated Monticello’s Jesse Martinez 6-0, 6-1 and Vito Sapenzia completed the sweep of the singles matches in three sets, 3-6, 6-3 and 7-5 with a victory over Tre Branch.

In doubles action, Monticello brothers Tanner and Tyler Wuerthner defeated Ryan Cerullo and Matt Boyd 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 and 7-2. Liberty’s Roothland Medina and Sam Heinle downed Gary Siegel and Mark Takourian 6-2, 6-4. In the last doubles match, Liberty’s Jason Levine and Max Siegel defeated Eric Morales and Connor Buckles 6-3, 6-2.

Liberty (3-3) previously beat Fallsburg and O’Neill. They lost to Goshen, Monroe-Woodbury and Burke. Monticello remained winless at 0-8.
