600-plus attend PPL’s 10th Earth Day Celebration

HAWLEY, PA — Violet Whitmore, left, and Uma Bullock display the GPS unit they used during a geocaching activity led by Wallenpaupack Area School District teachers during Pike/Wayne Earth Day Celebration on April 19. Crowds of children and adults thronged PPL’s Lake Wallenpaupack Environmental Learning Center to learn about earth-friendly activities such as recycling, composting and alternative energy. Environmental information was offered on topics such as mountaintop removal, watershed impacts and organic gardening. Nature walks were conducted by herbalist Nathaniel Whitmore and Northeast Pennsylvania Audubon Society. Participants built birdhouses and crafted peanut-butter pinecones studded with birdseed. PPL’s live Falcon Cam provided sneak peaks of two newly hatched falcon chicks. Free white pine seedlings were offered to all who attended.
