The thorny pig
A slow-moving rounded form that crossed Route 97 last week near Narrowsburg, NY proved to be a young porcupine. Grabbing the camera, I was able to get quite close to the bumbling creature, whose main defense is the blanket of quills that covers its dark brown body.

Extension to hold maple confections workshop
LIBERTY, NYSteve Childs, New York maple specialist from Cornell University, will lead a hands-on workshop in making maple cream, maple granulated sugar, molded maple candy and crystal coating from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 19. This workshop, to be held at the extension center at 64 Ferndale-Loomis Road, is geared toward all levels from novice to very experienced confection makers.

First monsters caught
LACKAWAXEN, PAOf the 100 Monster Trout stocked in the Lackawaxen River on March 29, 23 were caught and certified. Among the winners was William Payne of Glen Spey, NY, pictured here holding his five-and-one-half-pound, 22.5-inch rainbow trout. With him is his fishing buddy, Joey DeFebo of the Village of Lackawaxen.
