Youth bicycling club
starts in Liberty
LIBERTY, NY The Liberty Youth Bicycling Club, a special club for young cyclists ages seven through 16, has been started in Liberty. The club is a joint effort between LibertyBikeTrail.org and the Town of Liberty Parks & Recreation Department. Parents and guardians can sign their children up at the Liberty Parks & Recreation Department in the Village of Liberty.
The program will focus on three core aspects: bicycling, trail building and stewardship.
Youth will engage in group rides, and learn how to become better riders and how to perform basic maintenance on their bikes from instructors. They will be split into groups based on age level and experience. Parents are welcome to ride too. Youth will also learn various fitness techniques essential for riding and being healthy. (Helmets and appropriate bikes are required.)
Youth will also learn about the history of the trails and how to keep them in top shape for years of riding. They will earn valuable community service time by helping in building the trailhead for the Liberty Rail Trail on Chestnut Street in Liberty.
Participants will engage in stewardship by helping to keep the trails clear for all to enjoy. The stewardship program will teach youth how to have pride in the trails and respect the natural environment.
Club members will get a T-shirt for signing up. Certificates/awards will be given out at a barbeque scheduled for the 9th of August at Walnut Mountain. Participants will also be treated to guest instructors including pro bicyclist and avid health/mountain bike experts from across the Northeast.
The club will hold a five-week program on Saturday mornings for one hour and 15 minutes, starting on June 14 and ending on August 19 with the barbeque.
The cost is $15 for residents, $20 for non-residents.
