SCCC makes its debut at new field with a pair of wins
LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY - The Sullivan Community College (SCCC) Generals baseball team (8-10, 4-5) swept a Mid-Hudson Conference double header on April 13 from Westchester Community College by scores of 10-5 and 5-1. The two games mark the first ones played at the new baseball field on the SCCC campus.
Mike Prunka (Glen Spey/Eldred) won the inaugural game, going the distance, giving up only one earned run and scattering seven hits.
"I am very pleased that Mike got the first win here at our new field," said Generals coach Mike Marra. "Mike has been the local face of our program for the past two seasons, and for him to come out here and pitch a complete-game win on the first game at home is very special."
Prunka was helped out by the Generals offense, led by Ali Ferreiras (Bronx/Alfred Smith), who went four for five, including a triple and two RBI. Mark Roarty (Secaucus/ Hudson Catholic) went two for four with two RBI. Albert Bevacqua (Staten Island/New Dorp) went two for four with an RBI double. Mike Donohue (Walden/Valley Central) went two for three with a triple and a RBI.
The Generals got to Westcos starter Brian McClenin in the fourth, scoring four runs, and put the game out of reach with three run in the seventh. Ricky Gundert's three-run homerun in the seventh cut the lead to 10-5, but Prunka struck out Mike Lee to end the game.
John DeGroodt (Walden/Valley Central) pitched a complete-game victory in game two, striking out 10 and walking none. The lone score was courtesy of a solo home run by Mason Colon. DeGroodt scattered five hits on the afternoon. Ali Ferreiras continued his hot hitting in game two, going three for four with three doubles, two RBI and two runs scored.
"John was in complete control today," Marra said. "His fastball was electric and he had outstanding command."
The Generals have won three straight and played at home against Dutchess on April 15.
