TAMMY GUNDERMAN BENNETT

Tammy Gunderman Bennett of Honesdale, PA passed away on April 1, 2008, at home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Tammy was employed by Wayne Memorial Hospital for the past 12 years. She loved life and her family and friends, and she will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, John L. Bennett Jr. at home; her mother, Viola Gunderman Tubbs of Great Bend; two brothers, Warren F. Gunderman and wife Lillian of Port Jervis, NY and Thomas P. Gunderman and wife Diane of Sparrowbush, NY; two stepbrothers, William Tubbs of Kirkwood, NY and Edward Tubbs of Boca Raton, FL; one sister, Deborah L. Gunderman Heller of Susquehanna, PA; a sister-in-law; nieces Denise and husband David Vanessendelft of Morganton, NC, Kelly and husband Peter Merindino and Ann and Jack Sardina, both of Sparrowbush, NY; nephews Eric and Kyle Gunderman, both of Port Jervis, NY.

Tammy was predeceased by her father, Francis Patrick Gunderman and by her brother-in-law.

A memorial service was held on April 5, 2008 at the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home in Honesdale with the Rev. Arthur Harshman officiating.

ANNA DECK

Anna Deck of Obernburg, NY, a homemaker and lifetime area resident, died on Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris, NY. She was 81.

Born on July 12, 1926 in Long Eddy, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Hazel Ferguson Coddington.

Survivors include her children, Donna Buchanan and companion Lyle Schmidt, of Obernburg, Josephine Litzenbauer and husband James, of Damascus, PA, Laverne Kern Jr. and wife Erma of Walton, NY; her sister, Thelma Leroy of Hancock, NY; a daughter-in-law; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on April 5, 2008 at Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home, Callicoon.

Burial was at the convenience of the family.

EDWARD FRANSKEVICZ

Edward J. Franskevicz of Hancock, NY, rejoined his wife on March 31, 2008 at Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton, NY. He was 89.

He was born on March 27, 1919 in Hancock, the son of Kostany and Telka Yankowski Franskevicz.

He married Mary Danowski on December 26, 1948 in Hancock. She predeceased him on July 2, 2005.

Early in his life, Ed spent time cutting bluestone and logging. Later, he was a laborer, cement mason and job foreman. Construction took him to all corners of New York State. After retiring, Ed raised white-faced Herefords on his life-long farm.

Surviving are three daughters, Barbara and husband Jim Feehan of Sweet Valley, PA, Audrey and husband Jerry Dix of Hancock and Judy and husband Dave Gorton of Greene, NY; and a son, David and wife Beverly Franskevicz of Cochecton, NY; grandchildren, Jennifer and husband Jerry Peabody, Matthew Feehan, Gerald Dix, Aaron and Luann Dix, Scott, Kyle and Kaitlin Gorton and E.J. and Cody Franskevicz; a great-granddaughter; and three sisters, Tofka Zaczek, Anna Mapes and Helen Andersen.

He was predeceased by Mary Verry, Jennie Seaman, Francis Benowski and Nellie Danowski.

Funeral services were held on April 3, 2008 at the Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock, and a funeral mass followed at St. Paul’s Church with Rev. Stephen Morris officiating. Burial followed at St. Paul’s Cemetery.

LESTER R. HILLRIEGEL

Lester R. Hillriegel of Damascus, PA passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at Community Medical Center in Scranton, PA. He was 62.

He was born in Callicoon, NY on October 2, 1945, to Lester R. and Margaret Thell Hillriegel.

After graduating from Delaware Valley Central School in 1964, he began his long career with the former G.L.F. and Agway, Inc. For over 36 years he worked in both New York and Pennsylvania, most recently as assistant manager of the Honesdale Agway store, before retiring in 2000. He was a former member of the Callicoon Fire Department and the Rotary Club of New Milford.

Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Beverly Whitmore Hillriegel; children Richard and Louise Hillriegel of Hawley, PA and Amy Hillriegel of Damascus; granddaughters Jackie and Brooke Hillriegel of Hawley, PA; brothers Philip and Steven Hillriegel, both of Callicoon; sisters Linda Lesoing of Bellingham, WA and Marcia Knapp of Hillsborough, NC; nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog Molly.

He was predeceased by an infant son, Michael.

A celebration of life service took place on April 5, 2008 at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home, Callicoon.

Interment was at the convenience of the family.

LUKE WILLIAM HOWELL

Luke William Howell of Port Jervis, NY, died Monday, March 31, 2008 at Westchester Medical Center with his family by his side.

He was born March 5, 2008 in Port Jervis, the son of William Howell and Leslie Sword.

A family statement read: “Luke was our miracle baby and a true fighter. He was born into a strong and loving family. He was daddy’s little man and he has now gone fishing with grandpa. We will all love you and you will be forever in our hearts.”

Surviving are his parents, William Howell and Leslie Sword at home; paternal grandmother Lorraine Howell of Port Jervis; aunts Claudia Howell and husband Daniel of Godeffroy, NY, Claudia Schroeder and Frank Phillips of Sparrowbush, NY, Melissa Crown and husband Brian of Huguenot, NY, Katherine Pallone and husband Geoff of Port Jervis and Virginia Hansen and husband Kirk of Matamoras, PA; and seven cousins, Jennifer Connolly, Joseph Connolly, Mathew Crown, Alexis Pallone, Gianna Householder, Erik Hansen and Alex Hansen.

He was predeceased by his grandfather Paul Howell, who died in 1993.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 4, 2008 in the First Presbyterian Church, Port Jervis with Rev. Stephen Huston officiating.

Burial was at Rural Valley Cemetery, Cuddebackville, NY.

ETHEL M. KOLINGER

Ethel M. Kolinger of Matamoras, PA, passed away on Wednesday, April 2, 2008. She was 85.

She was born in Carbondale on September 9, 1922, the daughter of the late Roy G. Winans and Ruth E. Miller Winans.

Ethel was the former owner of J & E Diner in Milford, PA. She was a member of the Deerpark Reformed Church in Port Jervis, NY, the Milford Golden Age Club, and AARP.

She is survived by her four daughters, Judith A. Mohn and husband William R. of Beach Lake, PA, Sally R. Hawley and husband Mark of Lookout, PA, Marlene K. Freehill and husband Judge Robert H. Freehill of Howells, NY and Linda R. Kolinger of Milford, PA; her brother, Glendon Winans of Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two nieces and two nephews.

Funeral services will be private.

Interment will take place at Canaan Corners Cemetery, Waymart, PA; with the Rev. Rand Kaizer officiating.

KENNETH LIST

Kenneth List of Port Jervis, NY and 25-year resident of the area died Sunday, March 30, 2008 at Orange Regional Medical Center Horton Campus in Middletown, NY. He was 62.

He was born May 29, 1945 in Queens, NY, the son of the late Emil and the late Vera McIntyre List.

He married Monika Posch on March 6, 1965 in Eldred, NY.

Kenneth was a police officer with the NYPD and retired in 1982. He was a member of Milford Bible Church in Milford, PA. A family statement read: “He was a good husband, father and grandfather. He was a perfectionist who never gave up.”

Surviving are his wife at home; sons Ronald List and wife Linda, Glen Spey, NY and Gary List and wife Luann, Richmond, VA; grandchildren Heather and Tyler List of Glen Spey and Cameron, Dillon, Krysa Lee and Mikaylah List, all of Richmond, VA; one nephew and one niece; and his mother-in-law, Hilda Dunlap of Eldred.

He was predeceased by his brother, Roger List.

A memorial service was held April 6, 2008 at the Milford Bible Church.

Cremation will be at H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg, PA.

CARL GEORGE WITZIG

Carl George Witzig of Sparrowbush, NY, died Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at Orange Regional Medical Center Arden Hill Campus. He was 89.

He was born August 6, 1918 in West Hoboken, NJ, the son of the late Herman and the late Lina Illi Witzig. He was married to the late Jennie Bassi Witzig who passed away November 22, 1985.

He worked as a maintenance machinist for Westinghouse in Jersey City, NJ and served in the U.S. Army Ordinance during WWII. He was a member of Roosa-Fleming VFW Post No. 161, Port Jervis, NY, and a member of the Swiss Turn Verein. He volunteered at the Farnum House in Port Jervis for many years. He was a member of the Golden Seniors of Sparrowbush, the Leisure and Deerpark Seniors and the German American Society of Tri-States in Port Jervis. A family statement read: “A sweet, gentle soul has passed from the loving arms of his family here on earth to his family in heaven. He will live forever in our hearts for he is ‘not dead but just is away on a vacation and we will one day be with him again.’ Auf Weidersehn, until we meet again…”

Surviving are four daughters, Carol Natalicchio and husband Robert of Toms River, NJ, Carlene Oeltze and husband Larry of Richmond Hills, GA, Denise Ogden and husband Chris of Milford, PA and Allyson Policastro and husband Frank of Sparta, NJ; 12 grandchildren, Robert, Jeannie, Diane, Donna, Richie, Michelle, Justin, Todd, Tonya, Cory, Bonnie and Tony; many great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brothers Herman, Alfred and Henry; and a sister, Emily.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family. Burial will be at Pine Hill Cemetery, Sparrowbush, NY.
