Monticello’s first Latina village trustee

To the editor:

Your report on Monticello’s election was incomplete. I can tell you, from close observation, that Carmen Rue did not win on the coat tails of the mayor, as reporter Fritz Mayer suggests. If anything, the reverse was true. The mayor sailed to an easy victory largely a result of Carmen’s work.

Carmen actively campaigned door-to-door since last June, covering the entire village. He did not. She personally collected well over 100 absentee ballots in this election, campaigning loyally for her erstwhile running mate as hard as she did for herself. He did not. She saw to it that many more than that came to the polls and voted “the bottom line”—for her ticket.

A close look at the numbers proves that without Carmen’s campaigning, the former incumbents would have been re-elected hands down.

The fact that Carmen is the first elected Latina village trustee in Monticello history was overlooked by your reporter and also by The New York Times. I would respectfully encourage The River Reporter to do a face-to-face interview with Carmen for a profile feature sometime soon. She can speak for herself quite effectively and deserves that courtesy.

To the editor:

On Monday night, March 24, I listened to Dick Riseling’s WJFF program on gas drilling. Despite the fact that Mr. Riseling announced that Marion Schweighofer of the Northern Wayne Property Owners Alliance turned down the invitation to join the show on the advice of her lawyers, I’d still like to hear her side. It would benefit all residents and landowners if Marion (with or without her legal team) would agree to appear on the show and discuss the issues with the panel from Damascus Citizens for Self-Government and Friends.

Frank Bartle’s family thanks care center, community

To the editor:

“And when we cried unto the Lord, he heard our voice and sent an angel” — Numbers 20:16.

Let it be known that the staff at Milford Senior Care in Pennsylvania gives the most incredible care. Each patient and family member is treated with love and dignity, pure and simple.

Anyone you meet—administrative nurse, aide, etc. etc.—is cheerful and eager to help in any way possible.

May God bless each one there, as they continue to be “angels of mercy.”

We are indeed grateful.

As well, we thank all who came, sent food, flowers, cards, Masses—we thank you heartily.
