Community reading day brings books
and volunteers to classrooms
WAYNE COUNTY, PA The 12th Annual Community Reading Day will be held Wednesday, April 23, and will bring more than 600 volunteers to second-grade classrooms in Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wayne and Wyoming counties. This event is the largest one-day literacy program in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Northeastern Pennsylvania Reading Association chose the books, supplied by Wayne Countys Boyds Mills Press, based on reading level and age appropriateness. After reading on April 23, volunteers, mostly from local businesses, will donate the book to the classroom. An appreciation breakfast will be held for volunteers on April 17. Dr. Christine San Jose will be the keynote speaker for the thank-you breakfast.
Bank of America is the corporate sponsor of the event, which is coordinated by the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Business and Industry, Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce, Carbondale Chamber of Commerce, Greater Pittston Chamber and Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce.
