FRANKLIN L. BARTLE

Franklin L. Bartle, a 72-year resident of Eldred, NY, died on March 22, 2008, after a long illness. He was 97.

He was born in Hornell, NY, the son of the late Percy and Emily Bartle.

Franklin joined the U.S. Navy in 1940 and experienced military action against German submarines well before Pearl Harbor. He was a crew member of the U. S. S. Haraden when it was struck by a Japanese suicide airplane on December 14, 1944. Separation from the Navy in 1946 did not separate him from a painful sensitivity to war’s destructiveness.

A family statement read: “He was at times wonderfully funny, quirkily iconoclastic, fiercely independent, affectedly curmudgeon-like, unfailingly loyal and at times incorrigibly stubborn. His sometimes gruff exterior melted when he listened to operatic or ballet music.”

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lee Addabbo Bartle, two sons, Howard and wife Linda Bartle of Sterling, NY and Thomas of San Pablo, CA; a daughter, April Bidwell and husband Bruce of Narrowsburg, NY; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Lackemann of Monticello, NY; a brother, Fred Bartle of Charlottesville, VA; and nieces and nephews.

Consistent with his own sense of privacy, services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.


FRANCES HILDEGARD OLVER CARD

Frances Hildegarde Olver Card, wife of the late James Ono Card, passed away peacefully at the Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale, PA on Sunday, March 30, 2008. She was 90.

She was born in Fallsdale, PA to Otto Owen and Louise Snavely Olver on June 30, 1917.

She and her husband operated a dairy farm in Milanville for 30 years and owned and operated Cushetunk Campground until 1988. Frances was a member of the Calkins Labor Grange #1063, a retired member of the United Methodist Ladies and a member of the Milanville Damascus Methodist Church.

A family statement read: “She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother. Frances was an avid bird watcher, gardener, family historian who loved to cook and spend time with her family. Family gatherings will not be the same without her and her famous baked beans and brownies with walnuts. Frances celebrated a luau for her 90th birthday last June.”

She is survived by a son, James Ono Card and wife Beth-Ann; five grandchildren, Kathy Card of Otisville, NY and partner Valerie Cattyi, Deborah Hanson of Honesdale, PA, Robert Card and wife Dolores of Lookout, PA, Daniel Card and wife Melinda of Milanville, PA and Michael Card of Hazelton, PA; 10 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Jeanne Hopstetter and her husband Robert; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Margaret Johnson and Elizabeth Cue; and a dear friend, Merlin Stephens.

Memorial services will be held on Sunday, April 6, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Damascus Manor United Methodist Church. Rev. Jean Mackie will officiate.

MILDRED N. CONKLIN

Mildred N. Conklin, of Dingmans Ferry, PA died unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis, NY. She was 41.

Ms. Conklin was born in Paterson, NJ and had resided in Hamburg, NJ for 14 years before moving to Dingman’s Ferry two years ago.

She was predeceased by her parents, Vernon & Georgiana Post Conklin Sr.

She is survived by her life partner, Henry Maloney; five children all at home, Matthew & Mindi Maloney, Mark Conklin, and Megan and Mitchel Maloney; 12 brothers & sisters, Bob Conklin of Greeley, PA, Vernon Conklin Jr. of Lake City, FL, Ernie Conklin of Wantage, NJ, Edward Conklin of Bushkill, PA, Christal Fedder of Hamburg, Warren Conklin of Port Jervis, NY, David Conklin of Wantage, NJ, Stewart Conklin of Kittatinny Lake, NJ, Brenda Shauger of Lake City, Georgiana Farley of Wantage, Susan Fields of Sussex, NJ and John Conklin of Dingman’s Ferry; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

ADAM EMANUEL ERICKSON

Adam Emanuel Erickson of Beach Lake, PA died unexpectedly Friday, March 28, 2008 in Beach Lake. He was 11.

Adam was born in Honesdale, PA, the son of Eric and Shannon Edwards Erickson.

He was a student in the fifth grade at Wallenpaupack Area School where he was a member of the chorus. He loved watching WWE wrestling matches.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Jonathan Erickson and John Erickson both of Beach Lake; two sisters, Erica Baldwin of Beach Lake and Elaine Tugend of Wilkes-Barre, PA; two aunts, Karen Short of New York and Kris Updegrove of Tafton, PA; a paternal grandmother, Ruth Erickson of Bartonsville, PA; a very special great aunt, Marie Edwards of Liberty; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 5 in the Beach Lake Free Methodist Church, Beach Lake.


MARIE C. FRANZE

Marie C.Franze of Yulan, NY, died Friday, March 28, 2008 at Hackensack Medical Center, Hackensack, NJ. She was 69.

She was born January 9, 1939 in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of the late Edward and the late Marie C. McGann Plate.

She was a member of St. Anthony’s Church of Padua, Yulan and the Yulan Fire Department, Ladies Auxiliary and the Rosary Society in Yulan.

Surviving are her husband of 47 years, William P. Franze; her son, William Franze Jr.; her daughters, Colette and husband Raymond Renelle, Kim and husband Thomas Scuderi and Kelly Russo; her twin sister, Betty Frazier; sisters Diane Bisset and Patricia DeGorter; brother Charles and wife Diane Connelley; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 31, 2008 with a Mass of the Resurrection in St. Anthony’s Church of Padua with Rev. Anthony Moore officiating.

Cremation was at H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg, PA.

JOHN A. GASKO

John A. Gasko of Binghamton, NY, passed away Friday afternoon, March 21, 2008, at Wilson Memorial Hospital. He was 66.

He was the longest standing member of New Hope Presbyterian Church, Vestal, NY. He served in the National Guard, and previous to that John had received a Congressional Appointment to the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. During high school, John was an outstanding athlete and held the New York State long jump and quarter mile records. He was a registered nurse. Most recently, John served the Binghamton homeless community through his church.

He is survived by his son, John W. and wife Laura P. Guerrero-Gasko, Round Rock, TX; grandson Aviel and a granddaughter on the way, Maya; brother William F. and wife Maureen M. Gasko, Worcester, MA; two nieces, Erika and Gretchen; one nephew, Colin; one aunt, Ethel Hulse of Lake Huntington, NY; and several cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, William P. and Henrietta L. Gasko.

Memorial services were held at New Hope Presbyterian Church on Monday, March 24, 2008. The Rev. Ken Thompson officiated.

FRANCES B. HOMER

Frances B. Homer of Port Jervis, NY, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at Belle Reve in Milford, PA. She was 91.

A lifelong area resident, Frances was born in Port Jervis on November 4, 1916, the daughter of the late Theodore and Jennie Camp Balmos.

She was the former owner of Homer’s Coffee Shop in Port Jervis. Fran was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Port Jervis, a member of the Port Jervis AARP and former member of the Milford Bridge Club.

She is survived by daughters Jane Nolan and husband Thomas of Gales Ferry, CT and Maryann Ey of Sparrowbush, NY; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and her nephew, Breck Balmos.

She was predeceased by her brother, Theodore Balmos.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 28, at 3 p.m. at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, Port Jervis, with the Rev. Phyllis Haynes officiating. Private interment will take place at Laurel Grove Cemetery, Port Jervis.

GERALD ‘JERRY’ LOVELACE

Gerald “Jerry” Lovelace of Pond Eddy, NY, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at his home. He was 78.

He was born at Buckhammon, WV on June 15, 1929, the son of the late Clarence and Minnie Lovelace.

Jerry was the founder and former owner of Jerry’s Three River Campground in Pond Eddy, NY. He was also a retired heavy equipment operator with Local Union #825, Newark, NJ. He was a U.S. Marine veteran serving during WW II. Jerry married Elizabeth May Constance Gilson Lovelace, who predeceased him.

He is survived by four sons, Pete and wife Debra of Pond Eddy, NY, Gerald and wife Laurie of Matamoras, PA, John of Port Jervis, NY, James and wife Mary Lynn of Norwich, NY; one daughter, Pamela Muller and husband John of Schenectady, NY; three brothers, James Lovelace of Port Jervis, Paul Lovelace of Indiana and Douglas Lovelace of Middletown, NY; one sister, Gail McKinley; 12 grandchildren including Super Pete Lovelace; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 21, 2008 at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, Port Jervis. The Rev. Robert Mayer officiated. Interment will take place at Pine Hill Cemetery, Sparrowbush, NY.


BASIL WASYL TANASIJCZUK

Basil Wasyl Tanasijczuk of Glen Spey, NY, died Thursday March 27, 2008 at home with his family by his side. He was 98.

He was born January 1, 1910 in Ispas, Ukraine, the son of the late Stefan and the late Katerina Marko Tanasijczuk.

He was married to his first wife Natalia Tanasijczuk who died September 24, 1971, and later was married to the late Maria Kobzy who died September 15, 1999.

Basil was a talented carpenter, cabinet maker and boat builder. He worked for Vallone Brothers Contractors in Brooklyn, NY. He was also a watchmaker and teacher of fine woodworking in Ukraine. He was one of the original members of Sts. Peter And Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Glen Spey.

Surviving are his daughters, Erika Irena Meriwether and husband John, Clemson, SC and Olga Crnosija and husband Mark, Centerport, NY; his son, Oskar Stefan Tanasijczuk and wife Nadia, Glen Spey; and three grandchidren, Alexander Meriwether and Natalie and Ivan Crnosija.

Funeral services were on Monday, March 31, 2008 with a Liturgy Mass Sts. Peter And Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Glen Spey, with V. Rev. Nestor Kowal officiating.

Burial was at Glen Spey Cemetery, Glen Spey, NY.
