Seven fielding blunders lead to Generals’ conference-opening loss

By RICHARD A. ROSS

VALHALLA, NY - The Sullivan County Community College Generals (3-5, 0-1) dropped their Mid Hudson Conference opener on March 26 with a 10-6 loss to Westchester Community College (5-4, 1-0).

The Generals committed seven errors in the field, which led to five unearned runs on the afternoon. Mike Prunka (1-2) suffered the loss by allowing seven hits over four and two thirds innings.

“Mike was not sharp early,” said Generals coach Mike Marra. “He hit the first batter of the game and our defense collapsed behind him. Before you could blink, we were down 3-0 after one inning.”

The Generals cut the lead to 4-2 in the fourth inning on Ray Valdez’s (Bronx/JFK) run-scoring double. The Westcos widened the lead in the fifth inning as Ricky Gundert belted a three-run homerun off Prunka, stretching the lead to 8-2.

The Generals’ offense was led by Eddie Pagan (Bronx/Hicksville) going four for five and Ray Valdez who went three for four with two double and two RBI.

“Our defense was horrible,” Marra said. “You can’t give a team nine extra outs in a game and expect to win.” The Generals will host their home opener against Rockland County Community College on April 5 at noon.
