NARROWSBURG, NY To conclude March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, Sullivan-
Arc will present a one-day art exhibit by 14 members of its community who have developmental disabilities. The body of work will be on exhibit at the Loft Gallery at the Delaware Arts Center on Saturday, March 29. There will be a reception from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., open to the public.
The exhibit, titled Expressions, is a rare look into the imaginative minds of these unique individuals. It wasnt so long ago that people with developmental or intellectual disabilities were hidden away and treated as less than human. But in recent times, because of heightened awareness and agencies like Sullivan-
Arc, individuals with developmental disabilities live productive, independent and inclusive lives. They are a vibrant component of Sullivan County, and Expressions provides us the opportunity to see some of what they have to contribute.
Vince Sanborn, Creative Arts Specialist for SullivanArc, finds that participating in creating art is extremely beneficial to some of the people the organization serves. Many who may not otherwise express themselves through speech or other means become dynamic communicators, with art tools in hand. Strong brushstrokes and vivid colors make bold statements for some who have no other means of communicating. Some of the artists may have limited movement, and work very hard at applying the paint to a canvas, but reap great rewards from their accomplishments.
Gallery hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Kristt Companys Frame Game will provide frames for the exhibit.
