Tri-Valley teammates Fiedler and Khan place as well; Roosa runs two-mile

By RICHARD A. ROSS

NEW YORK, NY — Tri-Valley weight throwers Garret Grey, Tanzeel Khan and Bob Fiedler, as well as long-distance runner Courtney Roosa, all qualified for this year’s nationals held at the Armory Track and Field Center on March 14 through 16. Roosa ran the two mile and finished 38th with a time of 11:52.20, which was her lifetime best.

The girls four mile relay of Roosa (5:21), Rachel Sanborn (5:41), Caroline Berthols (5:42) and Shannon Hornbeck (6:02) set a new school record of 22:49.61. They broke a prior record set in 1983.

Grey was the school’s top performer, taking 10th in the weight throw with a mark of 60-01. But to judge the skill of the competition he, Fiedler and Khan were up against, you’d need to know that the first-place throw was an unfathomable 87-10.75 heaved by Conor McCullough of Canoga Park, CA. Fielder placed 27th with a mark of 50:04.75. Khan placed 34th with a throw of 47:06.25.

On March 24, Tri-Valley’s spring track team traveled to Iona Prep for its first outdoor meet. Tri-Valley’s boys and girls teams are defending Section Nine Class C champions.
