The range of emotions displayed on coaches’ faces tell much of the story as they pace courtside yelling directions to their players, imploring officials to see things their way, showing their fervor or their calm, using timeouts as teachable moments and, for those whose teams come through the gauntlet, expressing the sheer joy of a title win they’ll never forget. |
Live from Glens Falls
By RICHARD A. ROSS
GLENS FALLS, NYSuperlatives fall far short of describing the most memorable state boys basketball championship weekend in recent memory. This was a year in which kingpins fell and underdogs ruled as seemingly unbeatable Class AA Mount Vernon fell to Bishop Magin on the same day that juggernaut Peekskill was blown out by Jamesville Dewitt in a Class A shocker. To add icing to the cake, never-say-die Olean knocked off defending champion Malverne in the Class B final.
Thousands poured through the doors at the Glens Falls Civic Center on March 14 to 16 to watch game after game of unparalleled excitement, which featured nail biters, blowouts, unbridled joy and the devastation of defeat.
Live theatre at its best, this years championship tournament was indeed one for the ages.
