Barryville beach goes under during high waters

BARRYVILLE, NY — At its monthly meeting on March 11, the Town of Highland displayed photos of flooding that occurred in early March, inundating the riverfront property donated to the town earlier this year. The town has not yet determined if or how it will develop the land, which lies in the Delaware River’s flood zone. Highland councilman Paul Zimmerman consulted members of the Upper Delaware Council, and reported that they advised careful consideration concerning any structures that could end up downriver during future flooding. “I never thought about the possibility of a Porta Potty floating away,” said town supervisor Tina Palacek. Both Palacek and Zimmerman urged that development be kept as simple as possible. The property is depicted in the area in front of the sign, which denotes adjacent private property.
