Celia Oset awarded new scholarship
Greater Barryville Chamber of Commerce recognizes outstanding volunteer service
By SANDY LONG
BARRYVILLE, NY The Greater Barryville Chamber of Commerce (GBCC) values the contributions of youth to its member communities, and with the awarding of the first-ever Community Service Scholarship to Eldred High School student Celia Oset, an excellent example of that service has been duly recognized.
We wanted to find ways to tap into the spirit and energy of our youth and have them share in the direction and future of our communities, explained Charlene Trotter, a member of the committee that established the award.
To become eligible for the scholarship, applicants had to complete a minimum of 25 hours of service, among other qualifications. Celia showed tremendous initiative and responsibility on every volunteer project, said Trotter. Oset performed many volunteer roles, beautifying the hamlet of Barryville with bulbs, grasses and mulch, staffing the information station, greeting visitors, assisting with the tree lighting ceremony and organizing members of the Eldred High School Honor Society for a litter pluck.
All of this was in addition to her busy school schedule. Along with playing soccer and softball, Oset served as class president, yearbook co-editor and a peer mentor. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Catholic Youth Organization and a Hugh OBrien Youth Leadership recipient, in addition to being chosen Class Salutatorian.
Teachers who know Oset have described her as one of the finest students I have had the pleasure of teaching in my 30 years of teaching, and a true leader who understands the work ethic needed to succeed.
For most of her life, Oset has wanted to be a teacher. And Trotter noted that the GBCC has already learned something from the inspiring youth. She has taught us that we are able to trust our youth to be role models in volunteering their passion and talent for our local community and our global community.
In an essay she composed about her GBCC volunteer experience, Oset wrote, The experience has opened my eyes to the fundamental good in people. The pride that I feel as I drive through the Barryville area is tremendous. I think not of my time, but of the people I have had the pleasure of meeting. After 13 years of classroom instruction, I can honestly say that this has been one of the most rewarding learning experiences.
Oset will receive a $2,500 stipend toward her college education. She plans to attend SUNY Oneonta, where she will study education.
The GBCC is currently preparing to send out announcements regarding the 2009 scholarship program. Students from Eldred, Wallenpaupack and Delaware Valley high schools are eligible for the award. Visit www.barryvilleny.com for more information.
