Topographic maps: a journey through time and space
LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY A new exhibit, Topo TalkThe Language of Topographic Maps, will open at Morgan Outdoors, 46 Main Street On Saturday, March 1. The exhibit features an array of maps of the Catskill region, some dating back to 1875, that tell the story of both subtle and dramatic changes in the world around us, from a creek that was dammed to create a lake to towns that no longer exist.
The distinctive characteristic of a topographic map is that the shape of the earths surface is shown by contour lines. These lines make it possible to measure the height of mountains and steepness of slopes. The maps also use symbols to represent streets, buildings, streams and vegetation. I learned that the lake near where I live was a spring-fed wetland until it was dammed, said Lisa Lyons, owner of Morgan Outdoors, and there were so many small schools dotting the landscape. I feel like a time-traveler reading these old maps.
At 3:00 p.m., beginners and aficionados alike are invited to join Chris Lisowy of Middletown for a short program about reading and interpreting topographic maps.
On Saturday, March 15, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., there will be a Map Lovers Trunk Show. Bring your favorite map and share with others. Do you have treasures on the wall or in the attic? Nows a good time to give them another read.
Advance registration for the March 1 program is requested by 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 29.
