This male eastern coyote, minus its tail, was recently discovered lying near the confluence of Ten Mile River and the Delaware River in the Town of Tusten, NY. The carcass provided an opportunity to observe this mysterious animal closely, rather than to rely on imagination. For example, size, in the mind’s eye, is often exaggerated. In reality, the average coyote is much like a medium sized domestic dog, ranging from 35 to 55 pounds. Stripping the coyote of fear-based beliefs allows us to see it for what it is—a skillful and intelligent hunter deserving of our respect, and a welcome reminder of wildness in the Upper Delaware region.

Coyotes in our midst: managing the fear factor

Their howls and yips travel long distances through the dark night, lending a sense of dread or delight, depending on your perspective. Curiosity can lead to greater understanding; fear can limit our ability to see this wily canine realistically.
