Speaking up for our resources
To the editor:
The Northeast PA Audubon Society has been monitoring the gas drilling issue in our region and will continue to do so. We urge others to do the same. A meeting is coming up on Friday, February 22, at the Delaware Youth Center in Callicoon, NY, to discuss Who Decides?
Audubon is concerned about the impacts gas drilling could have on groundwater, air quality, soil, wildlife, and the quality of our rural life which supports our tourism industry.
Environmental degradation from gas drilling would hurt leaseholders and non-leaseholders alike. We want to support everyone in efforts to make the best of the situation.
We stress how crucial it is to practice energy conservation and use renewable resources for our energy. Climate change is the most important crisis facing our planet. The sooner we move away from finite fossil fuels, the better for all.
Our mission requires us to stand up for those who cannot speak in their own interest: the flora and fauna and the resources upon which we all depend for life.

Help needed for victims of fire
To the editor:
This week, my friends Jessica and Caitlin Scheibling-Kelly of Liberty, NY lost their house to fire. Jess and Caitlin are two very awesome young ladies who have always been out to help everyone else. Both are part of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society for the two-year college, and both women participate in numerous community charity events, including American Cancer Societys Relay for Life.
At ages 22 and 20, Jess and Caitlin have already lost both their parents to death. Theyve had hard times but will try to forge on as best as possible. They will need more temporary housing, clothing and food until they can figure out what to do with their burnt home.
Im very aware that many of my friends struggle for food, shelter and money at times, too. If any of you can spare a few dollars for a donation, it would be greatly appreciated. The same would be done for you if necessary.
The benefit account is in their name through the First National Bank of Jeffersonville (any branch), or c/o Jessica and Caitlin Scheibling-Kelly, 19 Forestburgh Road, Monticello, NY 12701. You can also call 845/791-4000 or fax 845/791-4086.
