Wertmuller’s ‘Swept Away’ at the Monday Night Cinema

HONESDALE, PA — The original film “Swept Away” (1974), a socio-political and a sexual critique cloaked as an unconventional love story, will be shown at the Wayne County Arts Alliance’s (WCAA) Monday Night Cinema on February 18 at 8:15 p.m.

The film was directed by Lina Wertmuller, an Italian director, whose entrance into film making was by working as Federico Fellini’s assistant. In 1976, Wertmuller became the first woman ever to be nominated for an Academy Award for directing. “Swept Away” combines drama, comedy, romance and light sexuality. The unsentimental love theme is intertwined with elements of socio-political and sexual injustice.

The Monday Night Cinema Series is open to the public and is an interactive series that entertains and educates the community about film. Showtime is at 8:15 p.m., and a $5 donation is suggested to support the community programs of WCAA.
