JUDITH A. MAAS

Judith A. Maas of Cochecton, NY, a longtime resident of Cochecton, died suddenly at home on February 1, 2008.

She grew up in Needham, MA. She received her British Horsemaster’s Instructor’s Certificate in England and taught horseback riding for many years.

She is survived by her husband, Gary of 32 years; her son, Michael and his wife Mireille and their son, Michael; her daughter, Heidi and her husband Ramon and their sons, Bishop and Jadon; her parents, Thomas and Carolyn Pierseak of Needham, MA; parents-in-law, Harold and Gladys Maas; Thomas Maas and his wife Carol; her six brothers, Thomas and wife Heidi, Michael and wife Pamela, William, Robert and wife Jennifer, James and wife Elaine, and John and wife Marybeth; her sister, Jeanne Rayner and husband William; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, 90 Main St., Narrowsburg, NY 12764. Cremation followed at Lake Region Cemetery, Lake Ariel, PA.

VICTOR D. MAISEY

Victor D. Maisey of Shohola, PA, died Saturday, February 2, 2008 at Community Medical Center in Scranton, PA. He was 58.

The son of the late Victor Maisey and the late Helen Buckley Davenport, he was born in Milford, CT on November 24 1949.

Victor was the past Fire Chief and member of the Shohola Township Fire and Rescue Department. He was also a member of the Greeley Fire Department.

He is survived by his sister Deborah Lake of Matamoras, PA; and two nieces, Samantha Lake of Catskill, NY and Victoria Lake of Bainbridge, NY.

Friends are invited to call on Friday, February 8, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Gray-Rasmussen Funeral Home, Barryville, NY.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, February 9 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Jacobi Lutheran Church, Shohola, with Rolf Buchmann, chaplain of the Shohola Township Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, officiating. Cremation is to follow at Lake Region Crematory, Lake Ariel, PA.


RUTH MALEK

Ruth Malek, a homemaker and retired antique dealer and longtime resident of Sullivan County, passed peacefully on February 1, 2008 in Catskill Regional Medical Center, Harris, NY. She was 82.

The daughter of the late Max and Gussie Spring of Neversink, NY, she was born in Harlem, NY on November 3, 1925.

She was the loving widow of Zachary “Irving” Malek, who passed away in June 2005.

Ruth was an extraordinary woman, a very loving, caring and devoted mother and grandmother, and a sincere friend to all who were fortunate to get to know her. She had a radiant personality and was always happiest when surrounded by the people she loved. She had a true passion for life and was eager to share it with everyone she met. She will be missed greatly and never forgotten.

The nurturing and caring staff of the Skilled Nursing Unit of Catskill Regional Medical Center was wonderful to Ruth in the final eight years of her life there and will not be forgotten.

She is survived by her five sons; Michael Malek of Tennessee, Stephen Malek, David and Glen Malek of Monticello and Jerry Malek and his wife Carol of Bethel, NY; her four grandchildren, Zachary, Mark, Andrew and Adam Malek and Kenneth Cuttita; one brother, Sam Spring of Loch Sheldrake, NY; and many nieces and nephews.

Three brothers predeceased her.

Graveside funeral services were held on Sunday, February 3, 2008 in the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery, Sunset Lake Road, Liberty, NY. Rabbi M. Medwin officiated.

Memorial contributions can be made in Ruth’s name to the Skilled Nursing Unit at Catskill Regional Medical Center, Harris-Bushville Rd., Harris, NY.


ROBERT ALBERT MILLER

Robert Albert Miller of Rowland, PA and formerly of Staten Island, NY, died Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at his home. He was 81.

The son of the late Albert and Marjorie (Reischour) Miller, he was born October 20, 1926 in Staten Island.

Robert was a retired police officer for the City of New York; a loan officer for Chase Bank, Manhattan, NY; and manager of Farrell Lumber Co., Staten Island. He was an active member of the Sons of Norway and was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Solli Miller; two daughters, Janet Miller and Lynn Maschietto, both of Staten Island; a brother, Jay Miller of Matasquan, NJ; four grandchildren, Joseph, Tori, Dennis and Jayme; and two great-grandchildren, Anthony and Robert.

Services will be announced at a later date. Interment will be held at Rowland Cemetery, at the convenience of the family.

MARY ANN POTTER

Mary Ann Potter, a lifelong area resident, died Saturday, February 2, 2008 at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis, NY. She was 59.

The daughter of the late Lawrence J. McKeon and Patricia M. Hicks McKeon, she was born July 14, 1948 in Port Jervis.

Mary Ann was a member of St. Mary’s RC Church, Port Jervis and former assistant den mother for the Port Jervis Cub Scouts.

She is survived by her husband at home, Russell R. Potter; her mother, Patricia M. Hicks McKeon of Port Jervis; her daughter, Michelle A. Potter of Westbrookville, NY; two sons, Russell R. Potter Jr. of Pond Eddy, NY and James M. Potter of Port Jervis; one granddaughter, Hailey Codichini; six grandsons, including one in the U.S. Navy, YWSA Matthew Potter; five brothers, John McKeon of Port Jervis, William McKeon of E. Stroudsburg, PA, Robert McKeon of Sumter, SC, Thomas McKeon of Matamoras, PA and Kevin McKeon of Port Jervis; two sisters, Theresa Talmage of Charleston, SC and Kathleen McKeon of Port Jervis; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends called on Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 E. Main St., Port Jervis. Prayers were offered Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s RC Church, Port Jervis. The Rev. George Hafemann officiated. Burial was held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Port Jervis.

WINIFRED K. SPARLING

Winifred K. Sparling, a lifelong resident of Glen Spey, NY, died Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at home. She was 86.

The daughter of the late Ward and Ann Kimble, she was born March 10, 1921 in Unionville, NY. She was married to the late George Sparling.

She is survived by her son, David W. Sparling and wife Sharon of Glen Spey; four grandchildren, Robert and Rebecca Sparling and Scott and Bryon Sparling; four great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Audrey, Blake and Taylor; her sister, Julie Wollmacher of Ft. Myers, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family. The interment will also be private.


ROYAL STRONG

Royal “Roy” Strong, of Sparrowbush, NY, passed away Friday, February 1, 2008 at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis, NY. He was 83.

The son of the late Royal and Florence Strong, he was born at Ramsey, NJ on September 26, 1924.

Roy was a retired maintenance worker for C& D Battery, Inc. Huguenot, NY and a veteran of the U.S. Merchant Marines, World War II. He was married to the late Vera Edwards Strong.

He is survived by two daughters, Florence M. Word and her husband Walter of Port Jervis and Barbara Hendershot and her husband David of Port Jervis; his son, Scott Strong of Port Jervis; his sister, Gloria of Florida; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one niece.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Theresa Strong.

Funeral services were held on Monday, February 4, 2008 at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 E. Main St., Port Jervis, NY. The Rev. Robert Mayer officiated. Interment will be private.

doris m. wilson

Doris M. Wilson of Sparrowbush, NY and longtime resident of the area, died Friday, February 1, 2008 at home. She was 73.

The daughter of the late Frederick and the late May Peterson Snyder, she was born July 14, 1934 in Paterson, NJ.

Doris worked as a cook for the School of Conservation in Sandyston Township, NJ. She worked for the Salvation Army-Port Jervis Corps, Port Jervis, NY. A family statement read, “Mom was a loving companion to Richard and a loving mother, grandmother and sister who will be missed tremendously by all who loved her.”

She is survived by her longtime companion Richard “Dick” MaGill at home; her sons, Richard Wilson of Endicott, NY, Benjamin Wilson of Newton, NJ, Arthur Wilson of Port Jervis and David Wilson of Port Jervis; her daughters, Rose Wilson of Newton, NJ, May Rodriguez of Leesburg, FL and Ellen Decker of Newton, NJ; her brother, Robert Snyder of Plant City, FL; her sisters, Gloria Gass of Colddale, PA, Ruth Rollins of York, SC and Leona Wilson of Plant City, FL; 19 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her good friends and health care providers, Dr. Mehjabeen Alam and Dr. Pino-Y-Torres.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at Gray-Parker Funeral Home. The Rev. Joseph Iannone officiated. Burial was at Laurel Grove Cemetery, Totowa, NJ.
