February is Black History Month. Andrea Hernandez, a student from Delaware Valley High School in Milford, PA, created this poster of Garrett Morgan, the inventor of a variety of everyday gadgets including the stop light and gas mask, for the Delaware Democratic Club’s poster contest in its first annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebratory Tea.

Youth celebrate African American heritage
in words and pictures
DINGMANS FERRY, PAThe Delaware Township Democratic Club hosted the first annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebratory Tea on January 20. It featured an African American Orators contest and an African American Poster Contest.
The participants in the African American Orators competition made their presentations before an appreciative audience of 55 individuals from across Pike County and beyond. The first-place prize of $100 in the competition was presented to Diondra Martin for her stirring rendition of poetry by Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes, and the second place prize of $50 was presented to Al-Tarik Johnson for his reenactment of a fiery speech by Malcolm X.

V is for Valentine—and vets
SULLIVAN COUNTY, NYThe Sullivan County Veterans Service Agency will once again participate in the National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans through the annual Valentines for Vets program.
Grade school children from around Sullivan County will participate in designing Valentines Day cards for hospitalized veterans, and the Veterans Service Agency will send the cards to veterans at the VA Hudson Healthcare System in Castle Point, NY and the VA Stratton Medical Center in Albany, NY, as well as local nursing home facilities.

A sweet treat for Valentnes Day
MILFORD, PAAs a special Valentine treat, the Delaware Valley High School (DVHS) Drama Club will present an evening of entertainment entitled: The Sweetest Sounds—a Dessert Cabaret on Friday, February 15. There will be two shows, one at 6:00 and one at 8:00 p.m.
Talented singers and dancers from the DVHS Drama Club will serve up delicious treats, while entertaining audience members with classic theater songs. The proceeds from the event will be used to help finance this years spring musical, Hello Dolly, to be held in April.
