Sonnenschein wins boys giant slalom

Monticello takes second at Belleayre race behind Onteora

HIGHMOUNT, NY — Monticello’s Ryan Sonnenschein’s first-place finish of 1:06.57 helped pace the Panthers to a second-place finish in the boys giant slalom race held at Belleyare Mountain on January 31. Monticello’s combined time of 4:44.18 was shy of Onteora’s 4:41.53.

Fallsburg/Tri-Valley took third (5:00.18) while Sullivan West (5:40.85) was fifth. Liberty (5:43.33) took seventh place in the race.

Following Sonnenschein, Christopher Egenes of Fallsburg/Tri-Valley had the next fastest time among Sullivan County skiers. Egenes (1:10.12) finished sixth overall.

Monticello’s Richard Heins (1:10.34) was seventh and teammate Skylar Glick (1:13.37) took ninth.

Rounding out the top 15 were Monticello’s Ryan Heins (1:13.90) in 11th place, Colin Bunce (1:14.80) in 12th, Tri-Valley/Fallsburg’s Weston Currey (1:15.06) in 13th place and teammate John Bernstein (1:15.02) in 14th.

Sullivan West got its best performance from Alex Lander (1:21.69) for 21st overall.

Liberty’s Kris Ramos (1:19.93) was the fastest skier for the Indians. He finished 19th overall.

Skiers headed back to Belleayre on February 4 for a day of races that featured the girls races in the morning and the boys races in the afternoon.

The Section Nine championships will be held at Belleayre on February 12.
