O’Neill wrests non-league victory from Monticello following Regents Week layoff

By RICHARD A. ROSS

MONTICELLO, NY—It takes more than athleticism to be successful in sports. It takes poise, self-control and the ability to execute strategies worked on repeatedly in practice. For Monticello, a team that starts three seniors and two juniors, the nagging issue is finding a way to implement those basic offensive and defensive plans in game situations that are diligently advocated by coach Karen Atack.

When they’ve done that, such as in their lone win over Liberty or in their gritty loss to Class AA Valley Central, Monticello has shown its ability to be competitive. The Lady Panthers also lost a close game to Division III rival Goshen in the teams’ first meeting back in late December.

LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY—The S.S. Seward Lady Spartans arrived at Sullivan West on January 28 with an unblemished 13-0 record. With senior post player Kathleen Folkl coming out on fire, Seward looked to put the hammer down on the Lady Bulldogs early. Folkl scored 10 points in the first quarter and seven more in the second as she approached the 1,000-point milestone of her career.

Snow trackin’

By RICHARD A. ROSS

MONTICELLO, NY—Riding ATVs over snow-covered trails on a crystal clear January morning proved to be an exhilarating experience for upward of 200 riders on January 26.

Riders from near and far arrived at Monticello Raceway to register and grab some hot coffee, Danish or a bagel before heading out in groups to embark on the day’s 25-mile ride. This was the fifth winter ride staged by the organization best known for its annual charity poker run held each September. The late-summer run draws huge numbers of riders and much of the proceeds are donated to ailing area kids.
