Emergency assistance needed at Dessin Animal Shelter

Adopters, volunteers and funds needed

HONESDALE, PA — Approximately 30 dogs were surrendered to Dessin Animal Shelter on Wednesday, January 30. The dogs had been living at a Pike County kennel, but the kennel owner was stricken with cancer and became unable to care for them. Most of the dogs are either pit bull, Rottweiler or German Shephards, or mixes of these breeds and were adopted from shelters over the years in order to save their lives.

Pennsylvania dog law professionals, along with Dessin’s Pennsylvania Humane Police Officer transported the dogs to the shelter, which was already at capacity.

Most of the dogs will be available for adoption once they are settled in and evaluated, but Dessin staff members and volunteers are working round the clock to provide shelter and care to the dogs.

Help is urgently sought in the following forms:

1. Adopters for the wonderful dogs already at the shelter. If you have been considering adoption, now is the time to visit the shelter, take home your new friend, and free up a cage for the newcomers.

2. Monetary donations for food, medical care, etc.

3. Volunteers to bathe, groom and walk the dogs.

4. Spread the word to others who can help.

If you can help in some way, contact shelter manager Sue Frisch at dessin@ptd.net or call 570/253-4037. Emails are preferable right now, since shelter staff are busy handling the situation. Visit Dessin’s website at www.dessinshelter.com for more information or to see animals currently at the shelter.
