It’s deja vu all over again

at Monday Night Cinema

HONESDALE, PA — The Wayne County Arts Alliance’s Monday Night Cinema will celebrate Groundhog Day with a movie of the same name to be screened on Monday, February 4.

In this 1993 romantic comedy, which has become a cult classic, Bill Murray stars as Phil Connors, a smug and ambitious TV weather man making one last journey to Punxatawney to report on his namesake, Phil the Groundhog, for his Pittsburgh station. What he experiences, however, is an unexpected journey into his very being, as he is caught in a time warp, reliving Groundhog Day over and over again. In the course of his repeated experiences, Phil gets to see the local townspeople for their honesty and friendliness. Perhaps more importantly, he confronts his own mortality and expands his capacity to love someone other than himself. The film, directed by Harold Ramis, also stars Andie McDowell and Chris Elliot as his long-suffering television crew members who are quite amazed by their colleague’s journey.

Writing in The Washington Post, film critic Hal Hinson called the film “brilliantly imaginative and wildly funny.” The Museum of Modern Art featured “Groundhog Day” in its 2003 series of films that explore hidden spirituality. The movie is the first of the Wayne County Arts Alliance’s presentations that was filmed in Pennsylvania.

A donation of $5 per person is suggested, to help support the activities of the Arts Alliance. The showing will be preceded with a short introduction and followed by a discussion. Cinema Six is located in the Route 6 Shopping Plaza in Honesdale.
